Gunmen attacked the school on June 17, 2021 in an operation that saw the abduction of 97 students, but five students later escaped leaving 92 of them in the custody of the abductors for now.
One of the parents told the BBC Pidgin on Friday on condition of anonymity that he received a phone call three days ago from the leader of the abductors who informed him about their next line of action if the government fails to meet up with their demand.
“On a number of occasions they called me, what they used to say was that the parents should put pressure on the government to meet up with their demand if actually we want to see our children.
“This time around, the leader told me that he gave us five days else our daughter will be married off. Already, as a family the last three months has been our worst time because of the abduction of our daughter and this news that she would be married off is giving us a lot of concerns. I can’t imagine a 14-year-old being forced into marriage.”
Another parent confessed that the news hit him to the marrow, though one of the five students who escaped is his own ward.
“My daughter that escaped is still recovering as it would be very hard for her to recover quickly from the shock of the experience. At times, she would just wake up in the middle of the night with shouts, bad dreams and sometimes she would just cried as if she remembered something dreadful.
“There was a call few days ago, the leader of the bandits told us that they would marry off our daughters if the government fails to act within five days to release some arrested members of the abductors. I was afraid hearing this because my daughter was just 13 years and already she is experiencing this terrible thing.”
The two parents begged the government to act fast to save the children and the bright future they are pursing in the school
