The 47-year-old human rights activist and former presidential aide explained that Jesus Christ “came to die for the sin of Adam”.
In a virtual public debate on Saturday with Catholic Reverend Father Omokugbo Ojeifo, Mr Omokri said tons of Christians had been making the “mistake”.
“Christ came to die for our sins because physical man brought us into sin,” Omokri said during the debate that was moderated by award-winning singer, veteran journalist and social activist Onyeka Onwenu. “If you read the book of John chapter one. It is also in the other gospels. You see, a lot of people make the mistake and said Christ came to die for our sins. No, Christ did not come to die for our sins. Christ came to die for our sin.”
He went on: “John the Baptist said, ‘the Lamb of God who came to die for the sin of the world’. He did not say ‘sins’. Go and read that verse, it is for the sin of the world. He came to die for the sin of Adam.”
Mr Omokri said that “we are not sinners because we sin; we are sinners because we are sinners. We were born in sin, that’s why Christ came to die”.
He also said that the Church is not the building that people go to, but that it is the Christians themselves.
