According to reports gathered by Brainnewspaper, no less than 50 trucks had rotted away at their farms and markets, farmers are bitterly complaining over the loss of capital. This has been an issue that has lasted for over 3 days now, this was as a result of the stop order they received from the Onion Producers and Marketers Association (OPMA) to cut off onion supply to the southern part of the country. The agro regulating body made implemented the order on Monday after the meeting. The development as Brainnewspaper gathered was because of the rising food insecurity, which in turn lead to unforgettable losses to farmers.
Aiyu Isa, the National president of the association, disclosed this to the Newsmen when he was addressing journalists at a press briefing in Sokoto. In his statement over food insecurity and food blockade he said.
“If the government fails to adhere to the demands of the association, we are shutting down the supply of onions to the entire South by Monday, June 7, 2021,” Mr. Aiyu Isa said. He further lamented bitterly that an estimated worth of N4.5 billion worth of onions and food items have been destroyed, looted, and wasted by hoodlums across all the states in the southern part of the country, thereby incurring loss to the farmers. Therefore he’s calling upon the government to respond as quickly as possible to the demands of the association to prevent the food crisis and for insecurity from escalating. If their demand to be compensated are met, then there will be a stop to the food blockade to the south.
